These were my thoughts when I picked up a new Les Paul Melody Maker in the Maple Grove Guitar Center location yesterday. Aesthetically, It was gorgeous. The charcoal gray finish pristinely and flawlessly covered its elegant contours. I couldn’t help but notice that this edition of LP melody maker has an archtop, unlike past editions. The real joy, however, came when I pugged it in. This guitar has sass. Its tone was twangy, bitey, sharp, clear, and absolutely ideal for any sound from clean to high crunch. The soapbar P-90’s on this guitar are definitely a good set. I found, with delight, that the strings were incredibly easy to bend up to 3 or 4 semitones, and yet the guitar retained its intonation. Though they are out of reach of one’s strumming hand, they turn easily and quickly without spinning out of control. The parts and materials on this guitar are unilaterally high-quality. I absolutely recommend this guitar to anyone who plays rock, hard rock, punk rock, or classic rock. Made in the USA? Gibson removed the flair and glamour from their iconic Les Paul, stripped it down to the basics, and came out with one Hell of a guitar at a bargain price. My only gripe is that the P90’s pick ups have a bit of static and that can be intrusive. Nice gig bag to boot! Good buy and well done Gibson. Dont let the price fool u , it is a Gibson, great quality, and the p90’s are crunchy , and fierce! So great for power chords! Its the same with as a SG , so its very light, I luv the weight! The guitars that I tried were a LPJ, a Les Paul Futura, a SG Special, a couple of used Les Pauls and the 2014 Melody Maker. Suffice it to say, the Melody Maker won the contest. Upon getting the Melody Maker home and looking at it in better light, I discovered major flaws to the finish on the body of the guitar around the cut away on the top, a nick out of the bridge on the ninth fret by the 6th string and that the intonation sucks. I worked with the Local GC on the finish issues and worked out a deal where I kept the guitar and basically have it hung on a wall now. The bridge on this is a one piece unit and I can tune this thing all day and night but getting the intonation correct is near impossible because the bridge on it is a one piece and it kinda sucks. Oh well, money wasted on another Gibson.
